I believe in safer ingredients, not only in the food we eat, but in the cosmetic and personal care products we buy. Unfortunately, in the United States, we have a problem. For too long big food and the cosmetic industry have been able to use subpar and even toxic ingredients in our food and products. Thankfully, with the food industry we have labels that tell us which ingredients are in it and we can choose to walk away from non-organic, glyphosate laden foods or foods with toxic oils. It’s not perfect, but at least for the most part we are able to differentiate food items from non-food items without having degrees in chemistry.
The personal care industry, unfortunately, is not in the same boat. There are virtually no updated regulations that help us decipher products that are safer for us. Terms like “natural” or “organic” actually are not regulated in the personal care industry. This lack of transparency drives me crazy! Currently, it is legal for U.S. cosmetics companies to use known carcinogens in the products we use everyday and not disclose this! When the statistics for cancer and infertility are on the rise and some of these ingredients are getting linked to these problems, we need to do better. One of the things I love about the Beautycounter movement is that when I purchase one of their products, I don’t have to research every ingredient labeled to know that they are safer. Each product is screened rigorously and sourced responsibly. I can TRUST the products.
Here are some startling statistics:
1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime
1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime
41% of fertility issues are driven by issues with men's sperm count
Male sperm count has dropped by 50% over the last 25 years
80,000 chemicals have been introduced into commerce, less than 10% has been tested for safety on human health
10,000 of these chemicals have been introduced into our personal care products
1,400 chemicals of concern have been banned from personal care products in the EU
600-700 chemicals of concern have been banned from personal care products in Canada
ONLY 30 chemicals of concern have been banned from personal care products in the US
A study found that teens who switched to safer products had a 20-40% drop in harmful chemicals in their blood.
A study by the Red Cross found more than 200 industrial chemicals found in the cord blood of newborn babies.
In the US and Canada, it is legal for companies to use dozens of chemicals under the simple word “fragrance.”
These numbers are unacceptable! I have slowly made the switch to safer products not only for myself, but for my boys and my husband. We have a problem, but thankfully, Beautycounter has been a great solution! I am thankful that not only is Beautycounter safer, but all their products are high performing.
